JoAnne has studied art for many years beginning with an Art History degree from California State University Northridge. She continued her studies with the California Art Institute and the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art. She is a member of LPAPA (Laguna Beach Plein Air Painters), California Art Club, Oil Painters of America, Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore, and the West Coast Pastel Society.
JoAnne has worked extensively in watercolor, acrylics, pastels and oils. She paints landscapes, portraits, figures and still lifes. She is currently working on a series of still lifes showcasing the beauty and simplicity of everyday items in combination with the organic shapes off flowers and fruit. She is most interested in capturing the effect of light as it passes over these shapes and disappears.
She combines bright colors with colorless backgrounds and rougher, agitated areas with smooth, peaceful passages to increase the intensity of the painting. She utilizes stylized, impressionistic brushwork and palette knife techniques to add interest and visual excitement to the surface of the painting.
As JoAnne’s Artist Statement says, “It is my goal to lead the viewer on a voyage of discovery throughout the painting with the hope that they will be drawn in by the contrasting elements of light and dark, color and colorlessness, impasto and smooth, vertical and horizontal, large and small, geometric and organic, shiny and dull, soft and hard. ”
